The Program Manager for Justice, Advocacy, and Change’s (JAC) primary responsibilities will help the Minister of JAC deepen The Riverside Church’s participation and investment in justice ministries in New York and beyond. Half of the position is spent coordinating Riverside Coming Home ministry for returning citizens. The other half is spent assisting management of the church’s social justice ministries portfolio. This individual will possess excellent skills in program oversight for underserved communities, have proven success in supporting congregation members and community volunteers, the ability to encourage theological reflection and appropriate emotional boundaries, solid administrative and organizing experience, and be an effective team collaborator.

Essential Job Requirements:

  • Assist Minister of JAC with the programmatic oversight of the Mission and Social Justice (MSJ) Department
  • Able to articulate and encourage a faith-based expression of racial, social, and economic justice
  • Support and collaborate with TRC’s MSJ ministry leadership for improved clarity of mission, action, and engagement
  • Help cultivate strategic partnerships with community institutions and social justice organizations that align with and help further the mission of TRC
  • Coordinate/facilitate Riverside Coming Home ministry for the previously incarcerated
  • Manage outreach and intake process; recruit and interview participants
  • Plan calendar of sessions, secure facilitators and guest presenters
  • Recruit, train, and match mentors
  • Coordinate meals for each session and associated logistics
  • Organize graduation ceremony at completion of program
  • Coordinate with the Beck Institute for Religion and Poverty on data collection
  • Maintain relationship with graduates and coordinate monthly alumni night
  • Manage external communications for program
  • Interface with church leadership, church members, staff and others on projects or issues as assigned by the Minister of Social Justice, Advocacy and Change.
  • Supervise potential MSW student intern

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • MSW required
  • Experience working in and advocating for social justice in multi-cultural and multi-racial setting
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact effectively across class and cultures in a collaborative manner
  • A clear understanding of the theological position of the Riverside Church and its commitment to faith development and social justice in the tradition of the American Baptist Church and United Church of Christ
  • Experience working to organizing for social change and justice
  • Experience in ‘open and affirming” ministry settings, preferably in a congregation with a multi-cultural and multi-racial membership
  • Experience in administration, conflict resolution, developing budgets, controlling expenditures and supervising staff
  • Ability to behave within the Staff Vision of The Riverside Church - “Love is our Aim and Mutual Respect our Pathway”
  • Able to work some Sundays and two nights per week when needed

  • Experience in teambuilding, program management, and community leadership
  • Able to maintain focus and respond to competing demands in a changing system.
  • Proven leadership in working with and supporting people of diverse theological and spiritual beliefs
  • At least three years ministry or equivalent program experience
  • Strong computer skills
